North of Kintore Previous: Kintore I was unable to explore the route of the canal north of Kintore, but by all accounts, little visible remains until the terminus at Port Elphinstone is reached. Milestone number 15 still survives by Bridgend Farm, just to the north of Kintore, in an area that has altered considerably since the closure of the canal; firstly by the building of the Alford Valley Railway (and its subsequent closure); and then by the construction of the Kintore bypass. After this, the canal follows the route of the railway closely, with little reamining. Culverts near Fularton and Broomend that carry the railway have both been attributed to the canal (the west side only in the former's case). Approaching Port Elphinstone, about ½ mile of the canal survives in modified form as the lade to Tait's paper mill. It has been argued whether or not this lade was part of the canal, but a 1986 survey indicated that it was indeed part of the old route, as indicated by old railway plans.
The canal terminated to the east of the old main road, A railway siding was built on the section of the route west of the railway, with the canal terminating to the south of Canal Road.
