Bingo and the Elderly

Bingo has a reputation as a game primarily for the elderly. This is only partly true though. The busier evening bingo sessions tend to attract a very wide age group of bingo players, but the afternoon bingo sessions are mainly visited by people of retirement age or older.

This is because bingo clubs frequently provide a valuable social outlet for the elder generations, one which is rarely found at other leisure establishments which mainly cater for the young. A session of bingo gives the older player a chance to socialise with friends, aquaintances and strangers, and experience fun and excitement with little risk to themselves. It gives these people a chance to get out of their home and enjoy themselves with their peers.

Bingo is also a good way for the different generations of a family to socialise. It is not unusual to see several generations of the same family going out for a night of bingo together, and bingo is certainly one of the few social activities that all members of the family aged 18 and over can enjoy with each other. Playing bingo is also an effective way for the more senior person to excersise their minds. The quick pace of the game demands alertness, and helps to keep the mind sharp!
